Introduction to Trip Destinations:

Tangjiahe Nature Reserve
Tangjiahe Nature Reserve is a famous panda habitat located at the Minshan Mountains and it has more than pandas. In the depth of those rugged mountains, we can find world-class attractions, colorful indigenous people, elusive endemic birds and a great variety of mammals, insects, amphibians, and plants. Though it is not easy to spot a giant panda in the wild, the rewards from paying a visit to this panda habitat are extremely high. With the umbrella protection of Giant Panda, its companion animals like Asiatic Black Bear, Golden Snub-nosed Monkey, Golden Pheasant, Chinese Goral, Sichuan Takin, Chinese Serow, Reeve’s Muntjac, Tufted Deer, Hog Badger, Yellow-throated Martin, Tibetan Macaque, Eurasian Otter, Siberian Chipmunk, Wild Boar, Red Panda, Temminck's Tragopan, and Leopard Cat also get lots of benefits. Spotting those lovely creatures in the wild can bring you lots of fun on your natural journey. A guided walk through this reserve will enable you to gain an understanding and appreciation of the panda habitat. Also you might encounter some animals and plant species you have dreamed for a long time in their habitats.

Bifengxia Panda Base
Ya'an Bifengxia Panda Base
Bifengxia Panda Base is located within Bifengxia Scenic Spots in Ya’an city, which is one of the starting points of the Tea and Horse Trade Route. Thanks to the humid and warm climate conditions in this area, the Bifengxia Panda Base has the most natural surroundings compared with other panda bases. The beautiful scenic Bifengxia Gorge is located just beside. If you like hiking, it is a perfect place for a half-day nature hike after volunteering.

Labahe Nature Reserve
Labahe Nature Reserve is one of the best places in the world to see wild Red Panda. In Labahe, you can search for mammals like Sambar Deer, Tibetan Macaque, Chinese Goral, Leopard Cat, Sichuan Takin, Chinese Serow, and Hog Badger. Labahe Nature Reserve is located at the Hengduan Mountains with an altitude from 1900m to 2,700m. It is covered with mixed forests and dense bamboos with the cloud drifted in and out throughout the day.

Hoh Xil Nature Reserve
Hoh Xil (also called Kekexili) means the “beautiful young woman or blue mountain” in the Mongolian language. Kekexili Nature Reserve in Qinghai Province is only a part of the Kekexili area. Established in 1995, Kekexili Nature Reserve is one of China’s largest nature reserves, covering 45,000 square kilometers. It was established to protect the unique plants, mammals, birds, and their habitats. In 2017, Hoh Xil was included in the World Nature Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Qinghai Lake Nature Reserve
Established in 1975, Qinghai Lake Nature Reserve is located in the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau covering an area of 495,200 hectares. The reserve was listed as “Wetland of International Importance” in 1992. Qinghai Lake as the main body is surrounded by a lakeside plain, grassy swamp, alpine grassy marshland, semi-desert and dry grassy beach with abundant wetland ecosystem and bio-resources. There are altogether 200 species of birds and beasts in Qinghai Lake and lakeside areas, including Brown-headed Gull, Great Cormorant, Bar-headed Goose, and Black-necked Crane. As a plateau lake, Qinghai Lake is a paradise for summer breeders. In spring and summer, around 100,000 birds fly to the reserve for their summer breeding. Qinghai lake also boasts of abundant fish resources that serve as a food source for birds there.

Tibetan Culture Experience
Our trip will go through the core Tibetan areas in both Sichuan and Qinghai provinces. Buddhism has long become part of local Tibetans' daily lives. Buddhism that requires treating the wildlife as equal living creatures as human beings. The belief in Buddhism has turned these places into a paradise for wildlife and an ideal destination for a wildlife safari. Located between the Han Chinese area and the Tibet Autonomous Region, this area has received minimum impacts from either side in its long history and its local tribal culture has been well preserved. This trip will enable us to understand the productive Tibetan agriculture areas and vast nomadic areas. If you are interested, a visit to a local Tibetan family can give you a unique understanding of typical Tibetan life, from sampling Zanba, sipping yak butter tea, to chatting about their family history. The spectacular Tibetan houses in the agriculture area are another bonus to this trip. Each county has its construction style reflecting the tribe from which the village has descended. Like all Tibetans in Tibet Autonomous Region, the Tibetans in Yunnan, Sichuan and Qinghai provinces are bold, good at singing and dancing. This trip focuses on wildlife, however, we will show you a lot more to satisfy your taste and make it a lifetime journey.

FAQs

1. How remote is the hotel in the Tangjiahe Nature Reserve on this trip?
The accommodation in the Tangjiahe Nature Reserve is located in the middle of the mountainous temperate forest in northern Sichuan. The closest community is roughly half an hour's drive and will require the assistance of our chartered van. The hotel itself is very nice and provides a relaxing place for us to begin our search for animals in the surrounding wilderness.

2.
What are the chances we will see wild Red Panda on this trip?
During our visit to the natural reserve in Labahe, we will have an especially good chance of spotting a red panda (depending on weather conditions). Labahe is considered one of the best places in the world to find these animals, our team of guides had conducted lots of trips to this area and have extensive knowledge about the wildlife there. In our past trips, our clients had taken very good photos of the wild red panda with us.

3. Will we see wild pandas during this tour?
While Sichuan is famed as a province accommodating the most substantial portion of the wild panda population (80%), it should be noted that spotting a wild panda is quite slim due to the small population and unique lifestyle of pandas mostly living inside the bamboo forest. Although visitors and rangers report viewing pandas in the Tangjiahe Nature Reserve almost every year, it's really hard to predict how a particular trip will go. For us, we will do our best to show you all the possible attractions we see inside this panda habitat and make your trip full of wonderful memories. Pandas live in the place we are going to visit, and we just enjoy everything we have blessed to see there.

4. Which indigenous cultures can we expect to encounter on this tour?
As we move into the western and northern reaches of Sichuan and throughout Qinghai, you are certain to be surprised by the sudden shift in the local cultural aesthetic. These areas are occupied by predominantly Tibetan communities that range from agricultural townships to families of nomads living in tents on the prairie.

5. How does the ecosystem/wildlife differ between Sichuan and Qinghai?
Many of the regions we will visit can be classified into two biomes: highland prairies and mountainous temperate forests. While we travel through the panda habitats in Sichuan, most of the local ecosystems will be typical of the temperate forests, while the majority of Qinghai will consist of prairies. One exception to this general description will be when we visit Tibetan communities in western Sichuan. These townships are also located in high-altitude grasslands, like Qinghai. In the prairies, many of the animals inhabit here including Wild Yak, Tibetan Gazelle, and Tibetan Antelope. During our time in Sichuan, we can expect to see Tibetan Macaque, Sichuan Takin and perhaps even Red Panda and Golden Snub-nosed Monkey.

6.  I’ve heard the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is very high in elevation, should I be worried about altitude sickness?
While the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is high in elevation, our team is especially experienced in guiding foreign tourists through these regions. We have planned this itinerary to give you a gradual acclimation period to get used to the elevation. However, if you have any trouble with the altitude, please talk to us for specific suggestions.

7. Are any of these animals dangerous?
Animals like Wild Yak, Wolf and Brown Bear can pose a real threat to guests, but our guides are experienced at keeping a safe distance between you and any animals we encounter. In most cases, we will also be watching these animals from the safe vantage of a van.

8. Will there be opportunities to purchase local souvenirs during this tour?
As we travel through Tibetan communities, there will be many opportunities to purchase keepsakes from local vendors. Our guides are happy to help.

9.  If I am particularly interested in finding birds, is there a way for me to request a specialist as a guide?
In addition to our experts specializing in mammals, we have many birding experts on the team. If finding birds is your priority, please let us know in advance.

Email us if you have any questions. Read our FAQ

Testimonials

The best travel company I have ever worked with.
Where to begin? I am an international tour leader. This team is our partner company, and for the last 5 years, they have proved time and time again to be by far the best, most meticulous, detail-oriented, experienced, and honest company I have ever encountered. These guys get it- travel is an art. They are focused on the experience, not the profit, and this is very rare in China. The founder, Philip, is one of the top birders and nature experts in Sichuan, and is well respected throughout the province and beyond for all of his efforts to support local culture and conservation of wildlife. He is from a remote Tibetan region and understands how to operate in the wild, unexplored regions of China- the real China. He is an excellent teacher and judge of character and has built an amazing team of loyal guides who cannot be topped. If you travel with these guys, you have made a wise decision.

Wildlife of Tranquility.
We really had a nice Safari trip in Qinghai and Yushu. Our itinerary included beautiful landscape, stunning scenery and animals in Qinghai plateau. We enjoyed and learnt a lot from our professional guide Philip and his driver. They are both very reliable and trustworthy. We only need to let Philip noticed about our special points of interest, and he would did his best for us. The journey was absolutely wonderful! The scenery is fabulous and the wildlife is amazing. We are lucky enough to meet different species of animals, such as Tibetan Antelope and Tibetan Gazelle as well as various kind of birds throughout this trip.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Philip and Lily again for the their expertee and value add-in to this special trip. Philip has even gladly share some photography tips and his beautifully taken pictures with us. These pictures definitely highlighted our valuable happy memory.
