Jindong Zhang
Jindong Zhang is a panda expert. He gained a PhD degree in Ecology at the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES) at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. His PhD research dealt with examining activity patterns and space use of wild giant pandas in response to natural and human disturbances in Wolong Nature Reserve, China. Now he is a postdoctoral scholar in the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability (CSIS) in Michigan State University studying on wild giant pandas, specifically focusing on examining the spatial-temporal patterns of human activities occurring across giant panda habitat.
Dr.Zhang is not just a scholar about giant panda. He is a doer who is actively working on wildlife conservation between institution and industry. In his research about the “impact of livestock on giant pandas and their habitat”, he and his team discovered that the horse distribution overlapped with suitable giant panda habitat and consumed considerable amounts of bamboo which may have resulted in a decline in panda habitat use. His study highlights the need to formulate policies to address this emerging threat to the endangered giant panda. Moreover, Dr. Zhang is now working with government to push forward the local economic transition from nomadism to tourism to save habitat for giant panda as well as benefiting the local community.
